CROSS-POLARIZED
2024

In the summer of 2024, I worked on upgrading Virginia Tech's 3D Scanning Lab's equipment and workflows.
A big part of the upgrade was moving onto cross-polarizing images in the photogrammetry workflow. We equipped our camera with a polarizing filter, purchased a Godox ringflash and fabricated a polarizing filter for the ringflash.
The resulting images and 3D models have minimal reflections and shadows, therefore, giving us a more accurate diffuse color data.

Below are some of the objects that were photographed using the cross-polarization method. I played with materials and textures to discover material boundaries for this method.

Stubby Fingers
Maraca
SoccerBall
Wooden Manatee
Pickling Cucumber
