ROCKS FROM MUSEUM OF GEOSCIENCES

The 3D Digitization Lab is collaborating with the Museum of Geosciences at Virginia Tech to digitize rocks that have been found in the state of Virginia. This is an ongoing project.

Using a cross-polarized imaging setup, we eliminated surface reflections and achieved accurate color data. The high-resolution models (~4 - 6 million faces) were optimized to ~10,000 faces for efficient online viewing, with high-resolution details and roughness maps baked in using Substance Painter.

The resulting .GLB models will soon be available on the Virginia Tech Libraries website, allowing patrons to closely examine the rocks in an accessible, interactive format.
